(245 words) Makar Chudra - the hero of the eponymous story by Maxim Gorky. Makar is not just a narrator, but a full-fledged actor - that’s why the reader should pay attention to him. We studied the description of the hero’s appearance in order to better understand his inner qualities.
In the work, the portrait of Makar the Miracle is given from the point of view of his interlocutor. He observes the beautiful, strong pose of the old gypsy and, at the same time, stillness - despite the gusts of a cold wind beating in his chest. His gaze fixed on the distance is also motionless. The dynamics are present in two details: firstly, the wind shakes the hero’s gray hair and mustache, and secondly, smoke from his pipe swirls around. Add to this the skin blackened from time to time - and the image of an old but still strong tree looms clearly. It is precisely this comparison that the narrator makes: “He [Makar] looked like an old oak tree, burned with lightning ...” - in addition, the phrase has a figurative meaning, since for ancient people, lightning falling into a tree symbolized his “chosenness”. Obviously, through this comparison, the author of the story gives the hero not only physical strength, but also wisdom; in this light, the legend told by Makar the Wonder and his thoughts about the world are perceived as truth, and the main traits of his character (pride and love of freedom) are perceived as ideal. However, there is a contradiction in the portrait that shows the price of a free and eventful life: Makar is called the old three times, although he is not so many years old - fifty-eight. It can be assumed that it was not years that "aged" him, but experienced events - so the mighty oak tree is destroyed by lightning, rain and wind.
Thus, the description of the hero’s appearance helped us to more deeply reveal his personality and more accurately determine his role in the work.
