Leskov’s prose is saturated with the folk language of the 19th century, which is changing over the years, and now it is difficult to understand. In order for you to remember the plot and analyze the main events from the book, the Literaguru team wrote a very short summary of the story “The Dumb Artist” for the reader's diary.
(400 words) The storyteller’s younger brother had a nanny whose name was Lyubov Onisimovna. This was a middle-aged woman. She used to serve in a private theater, being a serf woman. Now she often went with the guys to the cemetery, especially to the Trinity, and loved to tell different stories from her youth. And then one day she told about a stupid artist who worked with her. His duty was to make up the actresses before going on stage. Count Kamensky, who owned the theater, he was especially devoted. Only the gentleman trusted his hands and forbade the artist to make up and comb other men. Everyone liked the master, especially Lyubov Onisimovna. Gradually, a warm relationship began between them.
At one of the performances came the brother of Count Kamensky. Suddenly, one of the actresses playing the main role in the play was injured. Instead, Lyubov Onisimovna volunteered. The count was pleasantly surprised and presented her with camarine earrings. This meant that she, dressed in all white, after the performance should be delivered to him. The actress told everything to her lover, and he was horrified. The artist reassured Lyubov Onisimovna and said that she would definitely take her away.
Count Kamensky told his brother that he had a barber - a true professional in his field. The brother called the artist to his house under the pretext of cutting the poodle, and when he came, he asked him to prepare himself for publication. The hero willingly agreed, which surprised the count's brother. Can he really just disobey the orders of his master and comb the other person?
After the play, Arkady, as the artist was called, takes the actress to the village in the hut of a priest who is to marry them. However, he, at the sight of the count hunters who came in search of those who escaped, betrays his guests and indicates where they hid.
Runaways are returned to the count's yard. Arkady was thrown into a dungeon, which was directly under the room of Lyubov Onisimovna. She, unable to hear the torments of her lover, is trying to strangle herself. After one of these attempts, she finds herself in a calf's hut. A woman named Drosida, who lives there, told the girl that the artist was sent to war.
Three years have passed since then. And then one day someone threw a stone, wrapped in paper, into the window of the hut, where at that moment the girl lived. This was a letter from Arkady. In it, the former artist told that in the war he rose to the ranks, earned a lot of money and wants to redeem Lyubov Onisimovna from the count. The inspired heroine does not believe her happiness.
However, they are not destined to be together. In the morning, the girl finds out that at night the janitor stabbed Arkady. Drosida invites Lyubov Onisimovna to heal spiritual wounds with the help of vodka. Since then, she has not parted with a banner.
