The hero is happy, he even managed to kiss the lover's pen. However, the next day she does not even go to Volodya, who came to visit her, and therefore the young man is extremely excited. Of course, the girl guesses about the feelings of a young man, but they are not mutual, and therefore she is not serious about his throwing. One day she asks why he has such a sad look. The exhilarator burst into tears, accusing the lady of the heart of playing with his feelings. Zinaida apologizes, and they continue the conversation for another week.
But suddenly Volodya becomes a witness to the scandal between his parents. The mother from an anonymous letter receives the scandalous fact of an affair between her father and Zinaida. She says she is leaving immediately. Volodya decides to say goodbye to a neighbor and confesses to her that she will remember her until the end of her days. Later, during a walk, he and his father meet Zinaida. The father leaves his son alone and leaves in an unknown direction. The hero honestly awaits the return of the parent, but does not stand up and follows him, becoming a witness to the conversation of his father with Zinaida. After a small conflict, a man throws the girl, striking her hand with a whip, she kisses the bruise site, and the young man who caused this episode immediately runs away.
Soon Volodya went to Petersburg and became a student. The father was very excited while reading the letter and dies of a blow. The hero accidentally finds out that Zinaida is in the city, but soon leaves for abroad.
A few years later, he learns that she is married, but because of her bad reputation, it was not easy for her to do, as Volodya's interlocutor admits. He tells Volodya the address of Zinaida's residence, but the hero does not have time to meet the old love. The girl dies during childbirth.
