Tovstogubov never had any children, and they give each other tenderness and love. Ah, this is a touching “You”, affectionate words, constant treats. Pulcheria Ivanovna foresees the wishes of her husband, and he, jokingly, loves to scare a little spouse a little - he will talk about the fire, then about the war. But despite this, the air in the house itself seems to be saturated with love. And if the couple has a guest, then let him be sure - he will be fed to the fill and dishes, and attention.
But even in such a beautiful place unpleasant things happen. Once at Pulcheria Ivanovna her beloved cat disappears. Three days unhappy looking in the nearby forest, where wild cats live. Finally, a darling is found in the weeds near the house. But instead of joyfully staying after all his adventures at home, the cat, having eaten, runs off the window. This time forever.
Pulcheria Ivanovna sees in this a symbol of impending death. And all would be fine - the old woman understands that forever nobody lives on earth. Yes, she only worries about how her precious spouse would be without her. Under the threat of God's punishment, the old woman persuades the housekeeper Yavdoha to follow Afanasy Ivanovich after her death.
Soon the foreboding comes true, and Pulcheria Ivanovna leaves this mortal world. Afanasy Ivanovich is inconsolable. His room is empty, and no one offers the poor old man his favorite foods. His world turns gray and dims.
Five years have passed since the death of Pulcheria Ivanovna. The house is slowly deteriorating, Afanasy Ivanovich is getting weaker and sick. And, despite the past years, he still yearns for his late wife. Everything in the house reminds her, he constantly tries to pronounce the name of his wife, but in half he bursts into tears.
And, once, walking along the path of the garden, the old man hears a voice calling him. He is sure that it was his dear wife, she came for him. And that means his time has come.
The last request of Afanasy Ivanovich is to bury him next to his wife. And they are doing it.
