The end of World War II. Nineteen-year-old Misha Erofeev is in the Krasnodar hospital. He has a severe wound to his arm - his bones are broken, his tendon is torn - and the guy has a complicated operation. Anesthesia Misha does not tolerate well.

An unknown force suddenly rises you from the operating table and throws you somewhere into infinite darkness, and you fly into its depths, like a star in an autumn night. You fly and see how you go out.

After the operation, Misha hardly comes to his senses and sees a burning lamp, and next to her is a young nurse - Misha is in the ward for “heavy” ones. Around the wounded rushing about and raving. He can no longer fall asleep, and the nurse offers to "whisper". Misha says that he grew up in Krasnoyarsk, the nurse Lida is a local nurse, she studies at a medical university. Then Misha gets worse, and he falls asleep until the morning.

In the morning the nurse is gone. The chamber wakes up. Rurik Vetrov, Misha’s friend and year-old, gives him a cigarette, after which he becomes very ill.

This day passed in some unsteady drowsiness.I didn’t eat anything, I didn’t smoke anymore, I couldn’t read, I could not talk either. Narcosis was exhaled slowly.

The head physician, Agniya Vasilievna, a small and dry woman, like a commander Suvorov, tells Misha to lie still for two days, but he cannot lie down for two whole days. One evening he wraps himself in a blanket and crawls out into the corridor, but Lida does not find. Misha even tries to sing, hoping that Lida will hear him. Rurik learns that the girl was transferred to the operating room, now she is on duty a day later, and some officer is spinning next to her.

A little later they put a new tanker in their ward. He rushes about in delirium, there are not enough nurses, so Misha and Rurik are on duty next to him in turn. Lida comes to look at the tankman and reports that Misha’s vocal exercises conquered the “head of culture”. After some persuasion, Misha agrees to "sing for the people", hoping this will "win over someone."

Soon, he is already performing in the recovery room to the accompaniment of the accordion player-Rurik.

Now he almost does not see Lida. Misha believes that she is affectionate with all the wounded, and walks past the girl with a proud and independent look. Soon he sees next to her a flight officer with a mustache and a leather coat, and with grief he begins an affair with a nurse from the electrical room.

The wound on Misha’s hand does not heal, the fingers do not move, they have lost sensitivity, and the guy is having a second operation. Misha is worried: how he, a former orphanage graduate who graduated from the Federal Law, will live with one hand.

That night I almost did not sleep a wink. Rurik sat down to me several times, let me finish smoking, and with a sigh went to his bed.

From anesthesia, Misha is getting sick again. He is rampaging, and Rurik ties him to the bed. When Misha comes to his senses, Vetrov tells how, right under Lida, he “obscured all Soviet medicine,” and she reassured him.

Two days later, Misha and Rurik are transferred to the recovery room, where they occupy a cozy corner behind the Dutch stove. Misha’s hand is recovering, he is constantly training her and waiting for Lida. She comes to the hospital right from her studies at the medical university, and Misha “accidentally” encounters her in the corridor.

But she often did not have time, and then I waited for her another day. Only sometimes after an evening detour and after the end of the procedures did Lida have a free hour or two, and she came to the stove.

The hospital is preparing for the New Year. Agnia Petrovna, a teacher at a medical university, organized a performance of the student ensemble. The arrival of the “chefs” from the garment factory is also expected. The "cultural woman" is warned about shell-shock, which cannot stand the music, but she does not pay attention to it. The concert takes place in the main corridor of the hospital. At the height of the performance, one of the shell-shocked persons begins an attack. The Walkers rush to pacify him, the candles go out, and panic begins in the dark. Misha presses Lida against the wall and blocks himself. When everything calms down, the "cultivator" is kicked out.

But, as they say, there would be no happiness, but misfortune helped. After this “battle”, the relationship between me and Lida became such that we completely stopped avoiding each other and lurking.

Spring is coming. Rurik is commissioned home.He lends Misha his brand new uniform, boots, and he goes to the city. Approaching Lidin's house, he is afraid to go in and freeze on the porch until Lidin's mother leaves the house. She invites completely stiff Misha into the house. Sending Lida to the store, a woman asks to save Lida. She did not graduate, and Misha will soon be mobilized. Even if he returns unharmed from the war, he has neither education nor profession. A woman does not believe that this love has a future. Misha is offended, wants to leave, but the woman does not let him go.

In the evening, Lida and Misha walk around Krasnordar. She pokes out what he was talking with his mother, but Misha does not admit. He is full of emotional turmoil, but is trying to amuse Lida, poisoning front-line tales. Then they kiss for a long time under the starry sky.

Rurik leaves before the eighth of March, and “chefs” from a garment factory are invited to the holiday of recovering soldiers. Among the "gentlemen" falls and Misha. A beautiful girl of free behavior is taken for him. Misha has to take her to the hostel, for which he receives a scolding from Lera.

She asked for a change of sisters and was on duty for them, forgetting about sleep and peace, just to be with me.

Misha spends the last night in the hospital with Lida - they are sitting near the stove and are silent. In love, they confess to each other only in the morning. Lida wants to write in Misha's medical history that his temperature has risen - then he will remain in the hospital for a few more days. Misha refuses.

I probably robbed our love, but it was impossible otherwise. I would be ashamed to talk about my love.I would despise myself all my life if I were weaker than Lida.

The shipment is located in the former grain depots - "the barracks are not barracks, the prison is not a prison." All day, Misha sits in a corner, ponders a conversation with Lidina’s mother. Because of Misha’s wound, only non-combat service remained. “Buyers” come to the shipment every day to choose workers, but Misha does not come to them. Gradually, he admits that Lidina is the mother of law. When Lida arrives for shipment, he drives the girl away. The next day, Misha leaves with the “buyer” in Ukraine.

They did not meet again. The war ends, and Misha still hopes to meet his first love by chance, because for the one who loved, the very memory of love is already happiness.
